Lake associations and lake districts are important ways for lake property owners to help protect the lake ecosystems which provide such rich experiences for us. A lake association is a voluntary group of citizens who organize, usually as a non-profit 501(c)(3), to provide education about the lake and carry out preservation projects. A lake district must be more inclusive and has the additional authority to tax its members in order to protect the water. Both lake associations and lake districts may also sponsor social occasions so that people can get to know each other.
Here is a list of the lake associations and districts in Washburn County. If you and your neighbors wish to form a lake association, see “Starting A Lake Association” by UW-Extension Lakes for help.
